ALVAREZ & MARSAL EXPANDS IN ASIA
AND ADDS TRANSACTION ADVISORY GROUP
Alvarez & Marsal offers a complete suite of services to meet the growing demand from Asian private equity funds, corporates and state-owned enterprises; the Transaction Advisory Group is launched to help Asian companies unlock value
Global specialists in business turnarounds and performance improvement, Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), today announced, as part of it’s expanding business in Asia, the launch of the Shanghai-based Transaction Advisory Group and the hire of industry expert Xuong Liu to lead this group. A&M’s transactional advisory team will target the next generation of investors and Asian businesses who are looking for partners who can advise but also offer “hands-on” operational expertise to help them realize global aspirations.
The expansion of A&M’s offering in Asia, including the Transaction Advisory Group launch, is uniquely suited to the region’s current market environment. A&M’s end-to-end service offering helps clients, including private equity funds, corporates and state-owned enterprises, unlock the real potential of their businesses and fosters the creation of Asia’s next generation of game-changer companies. These next generation companies, which, historically, were primarily seeking cheap capital from investors, now, realize that they need to think creatively about their growth strategies and to embrace changes to their business operations in order to achieve profitable growth. This includes harnessing the power of intangibles such as networks and expertise that A&M provides clients through delivering Transaction Advisory Group services such as pre-acquisition due diligence, divesture support, refinancing reviews and IPO readiness planning, as well as driving operational performance improvement, to unlock real value in their businesses.
Oliver Stratton, Co-Head of A&M Asia, said, “A&M has been the leading turnaround specialist in Asia for over 10 years. We help clients solve their most challenging operational and balance sheet problems with hands-on leadership. As Asian investors increase in sophistication, China’s capital markets continue to evolve and the ways to invest and divest become more diverse, it is a natural progression for our business to launch Transaction Advisory Group in Asia to meet these growing demands from our client base.”
To lead the Transaction Advisory Business, A&M has hired Xuong Liu as a Managing Director in Shanghai. Mr. Liu joins from KPMG where he was a transaction advisory partner. An industry expert, Mr. Liu has extensive knowledge of the issues facing inbound investments into the region and a wide range of cross-border experience gained from working on some of the most high profile transactions in recent years. A&M has also hired Richard Chen as Senior Director to join the Transaction Advisory Group in Shanghai. Also from KPMG, Mr. Chen has more than a decade of transaction advisory experience advising private equity and corporate clients across a range of industries including, consumer goods and retail, industrial products and services, transportation and logistics, energy and resources, software and services, media and semiconductors.
Commenting on A&M’s appointments to the Transaction Advisory Group, Mr. Stratton said, “The addition of Xuong and Richard to our team is an exciting step in our rapid expansion in Asia. Both Xuong and Richard bring significant track records of advising clients on landmark, complex transactions, combining this with commercial experience that strengthens our core offering and is consistent with the end-to-end solutions for our clients who want hands-on operational guidance.”
Mr. Liu said, “It was an easy decision for me to join the team as A&M is globally recognized for operational expertise and has already established a strong presence in Asia. What makes us different is that we have built our Asia platform with the evolving business environment in mind, so we can partner with clients across all phases of the investment lifecycle, from pre-acquisition through post-acquisition with both private equity firms and corporate clients. We predict that many companies will seek to capitalise on this opportunity in the region, but A&M is absolutely the best suited to helping our clients unlock value in their operations.”
Paul Aversano, A&M Managing Director and Transaction Advisory Group Global Practice Leader, added, “A&M has a long history in global restructuring and we are committed to helping clients create value. This has helped us fill a gap in the market by offering integrated due diligence services for clients when they need it most. We have established a strong Transaction Advisory Group presence in North America, Europe and India backed by experienced senior hires, and this strategic expansion into Asia will mean we can truly serve global and local investors and companies in both domestic and international acquisitions.
